From a young age a child will
start to get proprietary about their own space and will start to see their
bedroom as the one place in the house where they make their own rules and have
their own kingdom. For adults, too, this can be a good thing, as it means your
child is apt to spend as much time there as possible leaving the main living
areas free from clutter - and giving you time and space to get on with things
around the house.
For this reason you should try to
make your child’s bedroom as friendly and welcoming as possible, bringing in
some aspect of their personality but also offering them something a bit
different to enjoy.
Bunk beds and high sleeper beds
can be a great way of saving space and also making for a more exciting sleeping
environment. Kids love to explore something a bit unusual and the sensation of
being much higher off the ground than usual can make bedtime very special for
them. With high sleeper beds you will be able to fit a workstation underneath
for homework, or something more relaxed such as a futon or sofa for overnight
guests and when they have friends round. This can free up far more space in the
room and make it seem less cluttered, as well as leaving you a place for wardrobes,
bookshelves and so on if it is a small room. With bunk beds you can easily make
both bunks exciting, with the top bunk obviously being high off the ground, and
curtains around the second bunk to make a cozy hideaway for whichever child
chooses this bunk.
For smaller children, having a
secret place where they can hide favourite toys and enjoy time in their own
space completely is important, especially as you won’t want them to have a lock
on the door while they are small. Find a decent sized playhouse which doesn’t
take up too much of the room but which still has space for them to keep one or
two special and private things. If you don’t want to buy a playhouse, you can
always erect a tent or teepee in the room - which can give a more magical air
anyway and be done for almost no money with some sheets and washing line or
wire.
Your child may want a living
space of their own as part of their bedroom and this can be simply done with some
stylish childrens bedroom furniture. This gives them somewhere to play with
friends, and even sit and read quietly when they wish to be on their own. Put a
rug down in between seating and you can form a little living room within their
bedroom without it taking up too much space or costing the earth.
In anything you do, you should
get your child involved in what they want and try not to say no to anything -
after all this is their space and as long as it can be maintained should
reflect their personality.
