A kid’s room is the most important place to them for a
number of years. As soon as they are old enough to walk and talk, as well as
work out what is theirs and what belongs to the rest of the family, they will
start to get proprietary about their own belongings, including their room and
everything about it. Although your home belongs to all of you, parents have
their own special places and technically own everything in the house, so kids
start to feel the need to have their own space and things as well. They want
somewhere to keep their secrets and play with their toys and, most importantly,
somewhere that feels like theirs. For this reason, you should always bring your
child in when picking out their room, and designing it in a way they will be
comfortable with.
If you don’t have much space you will need to be clever
about how the room is set up to make sure everything fits in and that your
child has plenty of space for themselves. If you have more than one child
sharing a room they will still want their own space and this should be taken
into account. Don’t just go for bunk beds to save space, as then technically
your children are still sharing one bed and one space. Think more creatively
and perhaps set up two high sleeper beds on opposite walls, with each child’s
own space directly underneath. This means each child has their own space
completely, on their side of the room and with floor space in between which can
be shared. Underneath a high sleeper you could put wardrobes and chests of
drawers, but what might be nice is to put a desk with storage baskets
underneath for toys and books. They can each have their own chair and easy
access to everything that is ‘theirs’. You could even place a curtain along the
underside of the actual bed so they can shut off and have their own space
completely for doing homework or even just being alone.
