  1. Kids Beds

    Sunday, 7 October 2012

If you are trying to get your child used to the idea of bedtime and going to sleep easily, there are many different ways that you can approach this. The first thing you have to bear in mind is that up until they are teenagers, children will never want to go to bed. Whereas adults relish the time they get to spend asleep, kids can always think of things they would rather be doing, and the added mystery of staying up late, when they see their parents staying up, or even older siblings with later bedtimes, will make them ever more reluctant to head to bed at the time you have stated.

Making bedtimes interesting for children is key to making it a time they enjoy and look forward to rather that something they dread, and coming up with a fun bedtime routine can help with this. Reading stories or playing audiobooks is one way to make already tired children drift off, and allowing them 15 minutes or half an hour of playtime before their official bedtime can help as well. but one of the ways that is guaranteed to send them off to bed happy is to make their bedroom and bed a place they want to be.

There are so many kids beds on the market that it can be difficult to choose between them, but you should think about your child’s personality and what they would enjoy in advance. A little girl with a fondness for fairy stories and castles will love nothing more than a princess bed, and there are plenty on the market to choose from. You could choose a castle shaped bed which has a special nightlight or built in window feature. Alternatively you could choose a slightly more grown up option and get a child sized version of a four poster to make her feel like a real life princess. You can be guaranteed that she will want to head to bed when she has her own kingdom to command!

For boys, beds in the shape of vehicles tend to go down well, as they can use their bed for play as well as sleep. If you can make their 15 minutes of playtime before bed bring the bed into it, for example, imagining they are racing around a track in their racecar bed, then it should be much easier to get them to lie down and go to sleep.

For older children, think about high sleeper and bunk beds. There is something a little more exciting and enjoyable about sleeping at a different level from the rest of the house, and kids love the idea of being able to choose where they sleep as well. If you can make the room cosy but also feel a little special with fairy lights or a nightlight, then even better and you should soon find that your children will prefer bedtime to any other time of day!
